Rodrigo Montoya, Brazilian musician hailing from São Paulo, has been involved in the free-improvisation scene since 2003 and is one of the founders of the Abaetetuba collective. After a few years playing soprano saxophone and classical guitar, he specialised in shamisen and biwa, traditional Japanese instruments which he studied in the Liberdade district in São Paulo. In 2008 Rodrigo relocated to London and performed regularly in England, Spain and the Netherlands. After a 3-year stay he returned to Brazil and resumed his work with Abaetetuba, spreading his music throughout South America.
Ignacio Moreno Fluxà is a Chilean musician, better known by his solo act, ihä, formed in 2011. With a sound which can be associated with drone and ambient, ihä’s sonic journeys are peaceful, yet courageous, relying heavily on improvisation and adopting an experimental approach. The introspective and minimalist spirit of his music evokes dreamy soundscapes and misty atmospheres, as evidenced by his discography, which comprises works released in Chile, Peru and the United States.
In February 2017, Rodrigo and Ignacio met for the first time ever and recorded an improvised session at the Ce chemin est le bon home-studio in Santiago, Chile, thus marking the birth of Yaca. «I», the duo’s debut album –the outcome of that session–, was co-released by Manjar Records and Ce chemin est le bon in June 2017.
In August of the same year, Yaca played live for the first time ever, sticking to the idea of free improvisation and collective creative action. The recordings of that performance constitute «II», the duo’s second album, released in December 2019 by Chilean label 404 Notlabel.
